IFA VIDEO REVIEW

Burn After Reading?...How about Burn After Watching?

Hang onto your seats folks it's yet another one of many off beat films brought to you by Joel and Ethan Coen. Now don't get all mad at the title of this article. This Burn film just really burned me. These two filmmakers have really set the bar and they have set it so high with such great films as Fargo, Raising Arizona, Blood Simple and the absolute stand out No Country for old Men, that they actually have done a dis-service to us by producing the Burn After Reading film. What irks me is the fact that, if an Indie filmmaker took that script with no names and produced it, it probably wouldn't have even made Sundance let alone some of the lesser known festivals...No Dance maybe? The film revolves around these 2 morons who work at a gym. Brad Pitt plays Chad a personal trainer and Francis McDorman works there as well. I'm not quite sure what she does there at the gym but who cares. Her performance in this film is great as always. Okay, so you're an Indie director and you tell your actor Brad Pitt to move to the beat while listening to your Ipod, And action.... The actor moves around like a complete moron, over acting, mugging, just totally overdoing it. You yell "cut" go up to the actor and say you're fired! Oh but wait, you can't fire him 'cause he's Brad Pitt! Oh well, you change your approach..."OMG Brad your were sooo funny...this is like Oscar material!".

I know I'm being sarcastic, but the truth is if a "no name" actor was in that role they would have been terminated.

Back to the story, Brad & McDermitt get a hold of a disc that is left in the gym. Brad pops it into the computer and sees that it seems to be sensitive CIA material so he and McDermand plot to blackmail the owner of the disc. The disc is actually the memoirs of a book that ex CIA  agent Osbourne Cox is writing. Cox is played by John Malkovich. The reality is that Cox was not a field agent but a pencil pusher so to speak, so the fact that he's writing memoirs is the comedy I guess..."ha ha".

Anyhow, Brad and Frances try their best to extort money from Cox. And BTW Cox's wife is having an affair with that guy from ER...George Clooney. Cox's wife, Katie, played by Tilda Swinton and is making plans to divorce her boring and bland super agent Malkovich. Meanwhile Clooneys wife is also plotting to divorce him.

Ughhhh, Ughhhhh, Ughhhh... that's all I can say. The film has many things going on at the same time and although it made me laugh out loud once I wouldn't consider it one of my top comedies.

For a rental I guess it's okay...especially after a bottle of wine...or 2!

Burn After Reading is available on DVD. Give it a shot...but before you do watch "He's Just Not That Into You" so you can get a feel for what's real! I'll be reviewing that film soon.
